Beyond the physical, CHOP is a rite of mourning. It is not a sad funeral. Rather, it is a boisterous and rowdy wake – a testimony to the will of those still alive, demanding to be seen and heard. It is the concretization of the ideals of Hope and Equity – a modelling of an alternate reality to the capitalist world.
I am a spiritual midwife: I listen to your words and your body. I ask God to bring me images, sounds, smells and memories of what you are experiencing beyond your spoken words.
We condemn racism. We condemn violence. And we stand for strong, principled and, as needed right now, clear, compassionate and resonant responses from our leaders and our communities to the outrages we see around us.
Hope is … an abiding state of being … Become a chalice into which this divine energy can pour; a lamp through which it can shine.
We must go down before we can go up. We must die before we can live. Consider the scriptures, the wise teachers, or Life itself, our greatest teacher.
Endings are always beginnings. Think of your life story as a circle instead of a straight line and you will see why. This practice, inspired by a poem by Christine Valters Paintner (read it all below), intends to open our awareness to the healing connection between what has been – and who has been – and what is.
When this has passed may we say that love spread more quickly than any virus ever could, may we say this was not just an ending but also a place to begin.
