Spiritual Companionship in Challenging Times
In seasons of uncertainty, upheaval, and collective strain, the work of spiritual companionship carries both greater weight and greater possibility. This series asks a set of searching questions that many of us carry quietly: What is ours to do as spiritual directors and companions right now? How do we keep our own heads above water? How do we take care of ourselves so that we can keep running the long marathon this work has become without exhausting ourselves? How do we replenish our resources? And how do we move beyond mere endurance into a more generative way of thriving, while modeling a quality of engagement that those we accompany can recognize and eventually inhabit themselves?
These one-hour sessions (presentation and Q&A) respond directly to the clearest signal from our 2026 Member Programs Survey: support for spiritual direction amid uncertainty and change remains the single strongest interest among our members, and has been for years. The series is designed for practitioners who want practical, embodied tools rather than abstract inspiration, and who understand that our capacity to accompany others is inseparable from the quality of our own inner life, our contemplative practices, and communal care.
Core orientation of the series
- What is Ours To Do: Distinguishing the work that belongs to us from the work that does not, so we neither collapse under the weight of the world’s suffering (and our own), nor retreat into detachment and spiritual bypassing.
- Self and Communal Care: Honest attention to how we tend our own bodies, minds, and spirits so that we remain available over the long haul.
- The Marathon, Not the Sprint: Practices that help us keep running without burning out—replenishing rather than continually depleting our resources.
- Thriving, Not Merely Withstanding: Moving from survival mode into a more spacious, generative stance that can still feel the world’s suffering without being defined by it.
- Modeling engagement: Recognizing that the people we accompany learn as much from how we are present as from anything we say. Our own well-grounded presence, capacity for living into questions and not-knowing, and commitment to mutual care become our core disposition.
- Practical Tools: Skillful means that can be used immediately in sessions and in daily life: simple, repeatable, and adaptable across faith traditions and spiritual orientations.

This opening session kicks off the series in the body and in relationship. Coke Tani will offer embodied consultation and practices that support both personal replenishment and communal care, helping us tend to ourselves so that we can continue to tend to others without exhaustion. Participants will leave with concrete, usable techniques and insights to remain grounded, steady and capable of sustaining the long arc of the work.
More sessions will be announced in the coming weeks.
