Profile: Sometimes, perchance we find we have stumbled upon a quiet wood that brings us clarity of mind and soothes our souls. Most of the time, if we are honest we feel as though we are stumbling about with a heavy pack of anxiety and uncertainty about life and our connection or rather our disconnectedness to it. Sorting through the complexities of our personal life is like navigating an obstacle course which seems to have been designed to bring us face down in the mud. Things are better when you have a companion to high-step through this obstacle course and come out laughing and smiling at the other end. This companionship is is at the heart of the experience of spiritual direction. For, what is all this about it if it isn’t about our spiritual life; the innermost part of us that moves us forward with courage and hope. I am convinced that meeting with a spiritual director/companion has the potential to lead us into the quiet wood where things become clearer, restful, and peaceful. I have found this to be true when I meet with my spiritual director. My desire is to be a companion to those who realize their need of sitting with someone who will listen well; be present to them and open up a space for the divine presence to enter in. Together, for an hour a spiritual directee has the chance to unveil a dream, speak a longing, brave a fear, wrestle with the mud of hurt, disappointment and even trauma and come away quieter, clearer, and perhaps more certain of who they are and how they will step forward in their lives to be fully alive. I have had a lifetime of experience in the spiritual life, beginning with significant and meaningful early formation as a Roman Catholic, to ministry as a Vineyard Fellowship pastor, and in the last 21 years as an ordained Anglican priest. I completed the Spiritual Direction Training with The Haden Institute several years ago and have enjoyed being a companion to children, young adults and older adults since then to the present.
