Profile: Spiritual Director/Companion, Courtney Mys, M.Div., BCC has 25+ years of experience supporting people in their spiritual path and development as a Board Certified Chaplain with the Association of Professional Chaplains and an ordained pastor in the United Church of Christ (UCC).  I have served the Mayo Clinic, Cal Berkeley, UCSD, the Center for Theology and the Natural Science, Sharp HealthCare, and UCC churches throughout the US through leadership transitions. My hope is that we all begin with a religious tradition and then integrate our wisdom and experiences into a spiritual life.  A graduate of Hope College with Bachelor Degrees in Geology and Religion, I gave up a plans to become a hydrologist after experiencing a spontaneous physical healing event at age 20 – told by several physicians “there was nothing that could be done”.  Adding a religion major to “figure out what just happened”, I left the midwest to study at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA.  Drawn to the intersection of spirituality and medicine, I completed two Clinical Pastoral Education residencies (3600 clinical hours) through UCLA and UVa Medical Centers.  With decades of experience working with people at times on the worst day of their lives, there is often a measured difference in coping in how we process experiences through a holistic lens of balancing body, mind, and spirit. Even though the religious books of wisdom are now closed, I believe that the Divine is “Still Speaking” to us through the power of the Holy Spirit for us to continue to grow and to ascend. One of my favorite quotes by the comedienne, Gracie Allen, sums up my own journey, “Never place a period where G-d has placed a comma.” Now living in San Diego, aside from clinical work, one of my favorite goals was visiting all 50 United States before turning 50 years old.  And to sustain my holistic self-care I enjoy large beach bonfires, kayaking, creating interior design as sacred space, and a good adventure film (with Trader Joe’s snacks).  If I am honest, I can say I really enjoy meditation, but in fact I really “need” meditation. Online or in-person, the process of Spiritual Direction/Companion emerges from various spiritual traditions in which one is seeking spiritual growth and discernment, especially helpful during times of change or doubt. The mentoring process creates a safe, confidential space for exploration without judgement. Sometimes it is about asking difficult questions and being open to hearing unexpected answers. Sometimes it is about realigning our understanding about our purpose and the presence of the Divine. Sometimes it is about letting go of old stereotypes and letting the Divine speak in new ways. The goal is to help us integrate spirituality, grow personally, and live authentically. An African proverb encourages us, “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together”.
