Profile: Rabbi Anne Brener, LCSW studied Spiritual Direction at CenterPoint in Santa Barbara and has been a Spiritual Director since 2000. Also a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, since 1986, Anne is Professor of Ritual and Spiritual Development at the Academy for Jewish Religion California. She specializes in grief and healing, and her book, Mourning and Mitzvah, in its third edition, was originally published in 1993. Anne was a founding faculty member of Yedidya’s Morei Derekh- Jewish Spiritual Direction Program and has contributed chapters to many publications on spirituality and healing, including LifeCycles: Jewish Women on Personal Milestones and Life Passages, Jewish Pastoral Care, Jewish Spiritual Direction, Making Prayer Work, Judaism & Health, and many others. Some of her work has been translated into Portuguese, Spanish, and several African dialects (the latter for those on the African continent who care for people with AIDS and those who mourn them.) Anne is passionate about the role of the community in healing. She works to de-pathologize the language we use to discuss normal life transitions that should be met with ritual and community response. She works to make the world safe for people who mourn and to make loss visible. She also works to make individuals comfortable in their supporting roles to those facing grief and illness and has completed the Supervision Course at Mercy Center.
