Profile: Rev. Angela R. Hooks, Ph.D., M.Div., is on the faith walk. She is creative. Passionate. Scholarly. Adventurous. Whimsical. Angela is an ordained Baptist minister grounded in Baptist tradition and African American Christian Spirituality. She peppers her practice with the Quaker spirituality concept to have "an experience of rather than the knowledge about the transforming power of Christ within" and the Benedictine rule "to keep in mind that she has undertaken the care of souls" and "to remember what she is and to what she has been called." Angela integrates contemplative practices through the arts with creative exercises in life writing such as diary writing, poetry and prose, and music and movement. Angela’s spiritual direction practice, Heartbeat Formation, LLC, has been shaped and created with love as the motivation, where Angela and directee companion together to experience the unconditional love of God through the act of holy listening, prayer, Bible reading, biblical meditation, and silence. Dr. Hooks is an interdisciplinary spiritual director weaving literature, writing, faith, and theology into Heartbeat Formation, LLC, spiritual direction and soul care practice. She earned a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theology Seminary (2023), completed spiritual direction training at Oasis Ministries for Spiritual Development (2023), earned her doctoral degree in English Literature from St. John’s University (2018), and her Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Manhattanville College (2015). Angela is a mother, wife, daughter, published writer, preacher, teacher, and a Jesus lover committed to being with you on your faith walk.
