An SDI Pilgrimage

May 27 - June 2, 2026

The spiritual history of England is filled with several highly esteemed mystics like Evelyn Underhill, C.S. Lewis, and Julian of Norwich, among many others. In this pilgrimage, distinguished spiritual director and renowned scholar of the English mystics Carl McColman will lead us in an exploration of their perennial wisdom through the lens of spiritual direction and companionship, which is woven into the tradition of the English mystics.

We will travel to Norwich, visiting Julian of Norwich’s cell, the Julian Church, and the atmosphere in which she lived—becoming steeped in its mystical ambience.  We will also spend two days in Pleshey, in the county of Essex, home to perhaps the most important English mystic of the twentieth century, the legendary Evelyn Underhill. Oxford will allow us to explore the mystical import of C.S. Lewis, and J.R.R. Tolkien, among others. There, we will also delight in the streets of the city, home to an almost 1000-year-old, and highly storied, university. And as no trip to England can exclude London, we will peruse the British Library to study the works of William Blake, along with visits to St. Paul’s Cathedral, and a dip into Roman pagan spirituality, particularly, the 1700-year-old Mithraeum in London.

Anybody who is interested in the work of spiritual companionship, whether as a spiritual director, spiritual guide, or as someone who receives this ministry from another, will find this experience deeply spiritually nurturing. We will be forming a small community as we go, enjoying the culture, history, and natural beauty of England, and its many spiritual treasures.

William Blake

William Blake (28 November 1757 – 12 August 1827) was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. Largely unrecognised during his life, Blake has become a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual art of the Romantic Age. What he called his “prophetic works” were said by 20th-century critic Northrop Frye to form “what is in proportion to its merits the least read body of poetry in the English language”. While he lived in London his entire life, except for three years spent in Felpham, he produced a diverse and symbolically rich collection of works, which embraced the imagination as “the body of God”, or “human existence itself”.

Although Blake was considered mad by contemporaries for his idiosyncratic views, he came to be highly regarded by later critics and readers for his expressiveness and creativity, and for the philosophical and mystical undercurrents within his work. His paintings and poetry have been characterised as part of the Romantic movement and as “Pre-Romantic”. A theist who preferred his own Marcionite style of theology, he was hostile to the Church of England (indeed, to almost all forms of organised religion), and was influenced by the ideals and ambitions of the French and American Revolutions. Although later he rejected many of these political beliefs, he maintained an amicable relationship with the political activist Thomas Paine; he was also influenced by thinkers such as Emanuel Swedenborg. Despite these known influences, the singularity of Blake’s work makes him difficult to classify. The 19th-century scholar William Michael Rossetti characterised him as a “glorious luminary”, and “a man not forestalled by predecessors, nor to be classed with contemporaries, nor to be replaced by known or readily surmisable successors”.

Further Details

Evelyn Underhill

Evelyn Underhill was a prolific writer who published 39 books and more than 350 articles and reviews. In her early years, she wrote on mysticism; in her latter years on the spiritual life as lived by ordinary people. This latter work is more accessible than the earlier writing. Perhaps the best introduction to her is Letters, edited by Charles Williams, which give an introduction to her principal ideas, her style of guidance, and her immense sense of humanity and accessibility. The Spiritual Life, an edition of her BBC broadcast, first given orally, is a clear, concise introduction to her thought. Most of Evelyn Underhill’s retreats were published, and many are still in print. A wonderful anthology of her work is Delroy Oberg’s Evelyn Underhill: Daily Readings with a Modern Mystic.

Her key early works on mysticism include Mysticism: A Study in the Nature and Development of Man’s Spiritual Consciousness and Practical Mysticism.

Julian of Norwich

Julian of Norwich is known and loved throughout the world for her book The Revelations of Divine Love, the earliest known book written in English by a woman. Written near the turn of the 15th century, Revelations has inspired generations of people for its groundbreaking theological understanding of God’s love and radical perception of grace.

After receiving a series of sixteen revelations from God during a near-death experience, Julian chose a life of hermitic solitude as an anchoress attached to St Julian’s Church in Norwich, spending the remainder of her life locked in a single, small cell. Here she wrote the book for which she has become so loved.

Her only interaction with the outside world was through a little window to which others would come seeking her wise counsel. While in this cell, she wrote down her account of the revelations she had been given and in so doing became the first woman to write a book in English. The Revelations of Divine Love by Julian of Norwich are as relevant to us today as they were 650 years ago, and her writings continue to have an impact on people across the globe.

Julian’s Revelations continues to inspire and enchant people from every walk of life, whether for its spiritual insight into God’s unconditional love or for Julian’s historic significance as one of England’s most well-regarded medieval women.
