SUMMARY:Spiritual Direction in Africa: For Who and Why
DESCRIPTION:Across the vast and diverse continent of Africa\, from its Eastern shores to the Western reaches\, and from the Northern deserts to the Southern savannas\, there exists a profound and widespread yearning for spiritual connection. We are highly religious and spiritual people with deep rooted traditional beliefs in God\, the essence of all things\, or however each of us might refer to the Ground of All Being. In seeking the Divine\, or the Beyond\, people often rely on spiritual leaders for guidance and a sense of direction and companionship. As spiritual directors and companions\, our challenge is to assist people in responding to that call\, particularly in the face of the many challenges we are all confronting. How can we do this optimally? How do we guide people as they deal with many contradictions that exist in life? Where is God\, or the Ground of all Being\, in Africa amidst our countless uniquely African challenges? How do we build a team of African spiritual leaders who direct and companion others to God\, or the Beyond\, to share experiences and resources? \n\n\n\nIn our collective journey\, we seek to facilitate a network of African spiritual leaders where we can share our experiences and resources communally. Please join and help us manifest our interconnected community of spiritual mentors\, so that we can aid individuals in their quest for meaning\, while collectively addressing the multifaceted challenges of the African context. \n\n\n\nThis gathering is only for Spiritual Directors and Spiritual Companions who are in Africa.

SUMMARY:SDI BIPOC Gathering - January 2024
DESCRIPTION:This session is for those who identify as Black\, Indigenous or a Person of Color who would like to connect with other BIPOC spiritual directors and spiritual companions. \n\n\n\n\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n\n \n \n Registration is closed for this event. \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III: \n\n\n\nWith civil rights advocacy in his DNA\, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III built his ministry on community advancement and social justice activism. As Senior Pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago\, Ill.\, Dr. Moss spent the last two decades practicing and preaching a Black theology that unapologetically calls attention to the problems of mass incarceration\, environmental justice and economicinequality. \n\n\n\nDr. Moss is part of a new generation of ministers committed to preaching a prophetic message of love and justice\, which he believes are inseparable companions that form the foundation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As part of his community engagement through Trinity United Church of Christ\, Dr. Moss led the team that came up with the “My Life Matters” curriculum; which includes the viral video “Get Home Safely: 10 Rules of Survival\,” created in the aftermath of Michael Brown’s death at the hands of Ferguson\, Mo.\, police. \n\n\n\nA native of Cleveland\, Ohio\, Dr. Moss is an honors graduate of Morehouse College who earned a Master of Divinity form Yale Divinity School\, and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Chicago Theological Seminary. He returned to Yale in 2014 to present the famed Lyman Beecher lectures. The three-day event included an in-depth discourse on the subject of “The Blue Note Gospel:Preaching the Prophetic Blues in a Post Soul World.” The lectures\, which demonstrated a homiletic blueprint for prophetic preaching in the 21st century\, were the foundation of his latest book\, Blue Note Preaching in a Post-Soul World: Finding Hope in an Age of Despair\, published in 2015. \n\n\n\nDr. Moss was named to the inaugural Root 100\, a list that “recognizes emerging and established African-American leaders who are making extraordinary contributions\,” according to the publication’s Website. Honorees range between ages 25 to 45\, and their accomplishments and successes transcend media headlines or statistics. \n\n\n\nWith a unique gift to communicate across generations\, Dr. Moss’ creative bible-based messages have inspired young and old alike. His intergenerational preaching gift has made Dr. Moss a popular speaker on college campuses\, at conferences\, and churches across the globe. He is highly influenced by the works of Zora Neale Hurston\, August Wilson\, Howard Thurman\, Jazz\, and Hip-Hop music. The work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, and the pastoral ministry of his father\, Dr. Otis Moss\, Jr. of Cleveland\, Ohio\, have been primary mentors for his spiritual formation. \n\n\n\nHe is the former pastor of the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Augusta\, Ga.\, his first pastorate\, where the church grew from 125 members to over 2100 disciples during his tenure. His earlier publications include: Redemption in a Red Light District\, and TheGospel According to the Wiz: And Other Sermons from Cinema. He coauthored The Gospel Re-Mix; How to Reach the Hip-Hop Generation with three other contributors\, and Preach! The Power and Purpose Behind Our Praise\, with his father. \n\n\n\nHis sermons\, articles\, and poetry have appeared in publications such as Sojourners Magazine and The African American Pulpit Journal. Those works include: Power in the Pulpit II: America’s Most Effective Preachers\, Joy To The World: Sermons From America’s Pulpit\, Sound The Trumpet: Messages of Hope for Black Men\, and The Audacity of Faith: Christian Leaders Reflect on the Election of Barack Obama. His work has also been featured on HuffingtonPost\, Urban Cusp\, and The Root. \n\n\n\nDr. Moss is an ordained minister in the Progressive National Baptist Convention and the United Church of Christ. He is on the boards of Auburn Seminary and Faith-In-Place/Action Fund \, and chaplain of the Children’s Defense Fund’s Samuel DeWitt Proctor Child Advocacy Conference. Additionally\, Dr. Moss is a Senior Fellow in the Auburn Seniors Fellow Program.

SUMMARY:SDI BIPOC Gathering - February 2024
DESCRIPTION:Essence and Enneagram \n\n\n\nThere is increasing interest in using the Enneagram for Spiritual Direction. Whether a novice or expert in Enneagram studies\, our time together will offer experiences of both type and Essence to understand more fully who we are and who we are not. \n\n\n\nObserving how easily Essence disappears\, we discuss the Ego Ideal\, what we believe is our best self\, but it’s a false narrative that distances us from Essence. Understanding the ego ideal sets up our understanding of how we engage in “othering\,” where we’ve decided that others are different from us! This awareness takes us into DEIB (Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion\, Belonging) conversations currently front and center in our lives. \n\n\n\nThis session is for those who identify as Black\, Indigenous or a Person of Color who would like to connect with other BIPOC spiritual directors and spiritual companions. \n\n\n\nAbout Erlina: \n\n\n\nErlina Edwards\, passioned by her business interests and spiritual pursuits\, is known to many as an Organizational Builder and Enneagram Practitioner. Driven by her commitment to Human Potential Development\, she successfully built sustainable organizations to advance emotional intelligence and overall psychological wellness. Erlina Edwards initially earned her Enneagram certification through The Enneagram School of Narrative Tradition and is professionally certified through the IEA.  \n\n\n\nErlina is an International Interfaith Seminary graduate\, an accredited Spiritual Director\, and a certified IDEA Consultant (Inclusion\, Diversity\, Equity\, Anti-Racist). Erlina also holds accredited academic certifications that have advanced and broadened her business and spiritual studies. She is the Co-Executive Director of The Narrative Enneagram School and runs a private spiritual consulting practice; she lives in Tucson\, Arizona\, with her husband\, Gene.  \n\n\n\nWebsite: www.erlinagedwards.com Email: edwards.erlina4@gmail.com  \n\n\n\n\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n\n \n \n Registration is closed for this event.

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing 2024 - Nature Immersion and Deep Listening
DESCRIPTION:The \n Forest \n as Companion \n Nature Immersion & Deep Listening\nMarch 3-9\, 2024 \n “So she goes over to this one tree\, and she spontaneously hugged it. \nAnd I said\, ‘do you think this tree might want to build a relationship with us? Let’s ask permission.’ ”\n\n– as told by Jeanette Banashak \n Nature Immersion\, Forest Bathing\, and Spiritual Direction and Companionship with SDI \n We are so pleased to welcome you back to join the SDI Community for this uniquely designed 6-night (arrive Sunday and depart Saturday) Journey to the woods of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. For all spiritual directors\, companions\, and seekers\, we invite you to spend a week immersing in nature\, breathing the clean forest air\, finding silence and stillness\, and experience deep listening on new levels. \n We know being in nature is good for us\, on many levels. \n When we go into nature\, we encounter life on a different level of being – simpler and yet richer. The constant chatter of our minds is slowed. Our senses are awakened. The air we breathe is fragranced with the scent of pine needles and the loam of the soil. Our ears are caressed by the sound of the breeze as it flutters through the leaves and the branches. Our feet connect to the earth\, waiting for us to make and receive the emerging energies. Our fingers lightly sweep across the soft fir needles along the length of a branch. We pause to gently place a hand on the trunk of a tree\, breathe in\, and on the outbreath acknowledge a true communion. All becomes still\, and for a moment it is so quiet we can hear our hearts beating – in tune to the silent rhythm of all that is around us – and we are one note being played in a symphony of Life. \n As we are spiritual directors and companions\, we listen deeply and consider the benefits beyond ourselves. \n		 We recognize\, and are invited into\, new levels of spiritual companionship. This involves listening to the trees themselves – what are they saying? What do they want to share with us? How can we listen to the story of the trees? It involves listening to the land – the forest itself\, the earth\, and the air. In a time of climate crisis and much environmental stress\, doesn’t the Earth too need our companionship? \n We then retell the story of the trees to one another. \n We reflect what has been revealed to us by the trees to our spiritual companions. And as spiritual companions\, we help to create the contemplative containers that will hold these sacred stories and help to weave them into our collective Story. We hold space for the tree\, the soil\, and the sky. We listen for what needs to be shared. We compassionately mirror back\, and we see ourselves too. We dissolve into being with all that is. There is no “us and the trees” – there is no separateness. You and I and the trees – we are one. \n A Unique 7-Day\, 6-Night Journey to the Blue Ridge Mountains \n The Blue Ridge Mountains \n \n The Blue Ridge Mountains are part of the Appalachian Mountain range. They extend 550 miles in the eastern United States\, and include parts of Georgia\, South Carolina\, North Carolina\, Tennessee\, Virginia\, West Virginia\, Maryland\, and Pennsylvania. The Blue Ridge Mountains are known for having a bluish color when seen from a distance. Trees put the “blue” in Blue Ridge\, from the isoprene released into the atmosphere. This contributes to the characteristic haze on the mountains and their perceived color. The Blue Ridge Mountains have stunted oak and oak-hickory forest habitats\, which comprise most of the Appalachian slope forests. Flora also includes grass\, shrubs\, hemlock and mixed-oak pine forests. \n About the Trees \n \n Affordable accommodations \n \n With this SDI Journey we are able to offer reasonable pricing\, with a significant Early Bird discount if you register by June 30th. We are offering standard single and double rooms in both a contemporary inn setting\, as well as multi-room cabins and cottages. Bring a friend (or a few friends!) and let us know with whom you’d like to share lodgings. If four or more of you would like to reserve a cabin or cottage together\, call us and we’ll work something out. \n Retreat Leaders \n \n Dr. Jeanette Banashak returns to guide our Forest Bathing Retreat. Jeanette is a queer and bilingual interspiritual and interreligious companion. She has a diploma in shinrin yoku (forest bathing) and guides people of all ages in nature urban immersion experiences as an act of justice\, as well as is working on a piece that explores interspirituality and trees. She is the co-founder/director of The Spiritual Guidance Training Institute\, an organization providing training in spiritual direction/companionship with an interfaith\, interspiritual\, inter-contemplative focus. Jeanette is the author of The Mindful Pilgrimage: A 40-Day Pocket Devotional for Pilgrims of Any Faith or None and a 30-Day ezine of haiga from the Camino (available on SGTI’s website). In 2018\, she became a “dual pilgrim” after walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain and Kumano Kodo in Japan. Jeanette also teaches social and emotional learning and development at Erikson Institute and spiritual direction at the Graduate Theological Foundation.  		\n \n Simon de Voil will be back to provide his special gifts of spiritual companionship through music. Simon recently facilitated the Weaving Our Paths webinar\, is an ordained interfaith/interspiritual minister\, trained to be a sacred presence outside the conventions of traditional religion. As a sacred musician\, spiritual mentor and worship leader he incorporates chant\, ritual\, poetry\, storytelling\, and mindful practice to create a space for profound connection and sacred witness. Simon provides music for worship\, ceremony\, and prayer in a wide variety of churches and non-religious spiritual communities. He particularly loves to create music for meditation\, healing services\, and rites of passage. \n Testimonials from our March 2023 Retreat \n “This was an amazing process.. it changed my view of the forest and nature… it deepened my spirituality…” \n ” I was invited to ask the stream a question\, and somewhat reluctantly did so. But what the heck\, why not? And then I received the clearest answer to a question I’d been toying with for weeks!” \n “Walking the labyrinth with this group was magical. Usually I don’t get much from walking the labyrinth with a group\, but this time was different and I had a deeply spiritual experience while walking.” \n “At one point that day\, Jeanette encouraged us to see what we could taste. I lifted my face and opened my mouth just as a raindrop slid off a rhododendron leaf and dropped onto my tongue. I felt nurtured by nature.” \n “I came home and immediately felt a deeper connection to the trees in my yard and neighborhood. Every time I walk the dog\, I think of my feet ‘kissing the earth.’” \n “The dusk to dark lighting\, the music\, and walking in the company of those who had companioned us on our transformative week of forest bathing was a magical and liminal space experience…I also will be more intentional and committed to my role and responsibility of listening to and being a voice for the more than human companions of our world.” \n “This experience confirmed to me that there is growing appetite for this wonderfully gentle yet potent transformative\, grounding and healing embodied practise.” \n Photos From Our Previous Retreat \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Planned Activities \n \n \n Learn and practice Shinrin Yoku (Forest Bathing) – from Dr. Jeanette Banashak\, trained facilitator.\n \n \n Receive (and offer!) spiritual direction and companionship in the form of 1/1 and group sessions.\n \n \n Daily guided meditation in the mornings and group reflection and attunement sessions in the evenings.\n \n \n We will offer activities to complement and augment the Forest Bathing experience\, including walking meditation\, spiritual journaling and haiku writing\, artmaking and contemplative photography.\n \n \n There will be unprogrammed spaciousness offered all throughout the week – find your own pace and rhythm for introspection and community engagement.\n \n \n We will intentionally set aside space for Emergence – rather than offer specific programming\, we will collectively discern what needs to be offered within a durational space\, based on what Spirit is arising in you and in others.\n \n \n A Sample Day Plan \n Subject to change\, but to give you a sense of how we envision a day might be structured. morning contemplative practice – meditation\, yoga\, outdoor sit breakfast morning program: forest bathing lunch rest\, walk\, creativity\, intentional community building in various groups poetry vespers dinner campfire\, drumming\, creativity\, reflection evening ritual\, dedication \n About Kanuga Conference Center \n \n \n \n More than a beautiful place\, Kanuga is a sanctuary for your spirit. \n Established in 1928\, Kanuga is a non-profit conference\, retreat and camp center nestled on 1\,400 peaceful acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Hendersonville\, NC. Slowly and mindfully\, we attune our senses in a natural setting and cultivate awareness\, relationship\, and appreciation for the intelligence of things both living and non-living. Forest bathing is an evidence-based practice that nurtures health and happiness through engagement with the forest or natural surroundings. Though the name was coined in Japan in the 80s\, people have nourished relationships with the natural environment since the beginning. In Japan\, forest bathing is a foundational practice for health and well-being and can be prescribed by a doctor. \n What about COVID-19? \n Kanuga Conference Center\, Inn & Lodging continues to follow guidelines from the CDC and the local health departments. All guest rooms are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. Every surface and touch point in the room\, and its entry\, are cleaned and disinfected using EPA-approved\, antimicrobial products developed specifically for the use against emerging viral pathogens and novel coronavirus. Public spaces are also continuously cleaned and sanitized at a heightened frequency throughout the day. \n How physically active will we be? Will I be walking the whole time? \n During this Journey we will take walks through the surrounding forest\, on paths and hiking trails. Our retreat center is surrounded by forests with easy access\, so there is no need to walk long distances if you do not want to or if mobility is an issue. We will let you know each day\, before any activity\, whether there is any physical intensity involved and the level of activity required. On any given day\, a participant can skip a walk. That said\, you should generally be in good health for this Journey. \n What will accommodations be like? \n We have a mix of accommodations through Kanuga Conference and Retreat Center. SUMMARY:Opening to Love: Decolonising Your Spiritual Direction Practice
DESCRIPTION:Registration is closed for this event. \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\nThe legacy of coloniality lingers\, even within our most intimate spiritual spaces. For many\, particularly people of colour and those of us on the African continent\, Western spiritual values and practices can feel alienating to who we really are\, perpetuating a sense of disconnection from our authentic experience of the Divine. Coloniality produces pain and disconnects in our bodies\, relationships and lived contexts. \n\n\n\nThis session invites you to decolonise your spiritual direction practice. We’ll explore how to dismantle internalised patterns rooted in coloniality to foster authentic spiritual growth and heal from the wounds of oppression. \n\n\n\nTogether\, we’ll ask: \n\n\n\n\nWhat does a decolonising spiritual direction practice look and feel like?\n\n\n\nHow can we name and release the ways coloniality has shaped our spiritual formation and direction practice?\n\n\n\nFrom a decolonising perspective\, how do we open ourselves to the presence and work of the Divine…to love\, liberation\, and wholeness?\n\n\n\n\nThis session offers a safe and transformative space for reflection and dialogue for deepening a spiritual path that honors you\, and collective and contextual wisdom. If you long for a spiritual direction practice that flows with the God who lives in you\, the wisdom of your ancestral experiences alive in you and that heals the trauma from oppression\, then this session is for you. \n\n\n\nAbout Althea Banda-Hansmann: \n\n\n\nAlthea Banda-Hansmann\, a passionate guide for personal and organisational transformation\,  is the Founder of Transforming Moments Consulting. She empowers individuals and groups to unleash their potential and divine power in and through them to create positive ripples by living into their most authentic selves. Her spiritual direction approach blends discernment\, creativity\, trauma-sensitive body-based practices and an active understanding of healing systemic oppression that we carry in us\, in order to create a safe and supportive space for growth and transformation.

SUMMARY:SDI BIPOC Gathering - April 2024
DESCRIPTION:Join us on April 23rd at 1p.m. PT! Our remarkable presenter\, Rev. Nhien Vuong\, J.D.\, M.Div.\, is going to help us “Listen Around the Circle” through a BIPOC lens. \n\n\n\nIn a time of great division\, polarizing communication\, and constant “othering\,” Reverend Nhien Vuong\, J.D.\, M.Div.\, draws from her training and experience as a professional mediator\, pastoral counselor\, and contemplative Enneagram professional to consider how we can listen more deeply around differences in a way that not only builds unity in the outer sphere\, but greater wholeness\, and even intimacy\, within. \n\n\n\nIn this month’s 1.5-hr\, interactive gathering\, Reverend Nhien will be using the Enneagram as a map of consciousness to guide us through a journey of “sitting in the seat” of other personality type lenses (based on the Enneagram map of consciousness). Through noticing how we listen through a lens\, and how we receive the words of certain other personality-based lenses “around the circle” of the Enneagram\, we can come to a better understanding of what our triggers are\, and how to be present to them. A great perspective for us BIPOC spiritual directors and companions to consider! \n\n\n\n\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n\n \n \n Registration is closed for this event. \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Rev. Nhien Vuong: \n\n\n\nReverend Nhien Vuong\, J.D.\, M.Div.\, (she/her/hers) is an international Enneagram thought leader\, keynote presenter\, and retreat facilitator who spiritually companions individuals around the globe using a compassion-based\, contemplative approach to the Enneagram. A former Stanford-trained attorney\, Nhien left the law to support the evolution of consciousness. An ordained Unity minister\, Nhien has been studying the Enneagram since 2002 and teaching it since 2006. She is a Certified Enneagram Teacher\, Accredited Enneagram Professional\, and the Founder of Evolving Enneagram\, a community-based business whose interdisciplinary team of Enneagram professionals offers interspiritual programming to seed and sustain our collective awakening. A Vietnamese refugee living in the United States\, Nhien is passionate about a world in which everyone belongs. She regularly offers scholarships for her programs and volunteers to teach the Enneagram to recovery groups\, non-profits\, and the incarcerated. Nhien is the upcoming author of Enneagram of Soul\, a 40-day contemplative Enneagram companion guide to living a more authentic\, inspired\, and soulful life\, scheduled to be published by Hampton Roads in 2025. \n\n\n\nIf you have further questions\, please contact office@sdiworld.org or support@sdiworld.org.
