SUMMARY:Forest Bathing 2024 - Nature Immersion and Deep Listening
DESCRIPTION:The \n Forest \n as Companion \n Nature Immersion & Deep Listening\nMarch 3-9\, 2024 \n “So she goes over to this one tree\, and she spontaneously hugged it. \nAnd I said\, ‘do you think this tree might want to build a relationship with us? Let’s ask permission.’ ”\n\n– as told by Jeanette Banashak \n Nature Immersion\, Forest Bathing\, and Spiritual Direction and Companionship with SDI \n We are so pleased to welcome you back to join the SDI Community for this uniquely designed 6-night (arrive Sunday and depart Saturday) Journey to the woods of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. For all spiritual directors\, companions\, and seekers\, we invite you to spend a week immersing in nature\, breathing the clean forest air\, finding silence and stillness\, and experience deep listening on new levels. \n We know being in nature is good for us\, on many levels. \n When we go into nature\, we encounter life on a different level of being – simpler and yet richer. The constant chatter of our minds is slowed. Our senses are awakened. The air we breathe is fragranced with the scent of pine needles and the loam of the soil. Our ears are caressed by the sound of the breeze as it flutters through the leaves and the branches. Our feet connect to the earth\, waiting for us to make and receive the emerging energies. Our fingers lightly sweep across the soft fir needles along the length of a branch. We pause to gently place a hand on the trunk of a tree\, breathe in\, and on the outbreath acknowledge a true communion. All becomes still\, and for a moment it is so quiet we can hear our hearts beating – in tune to the silent rhythm of all that is around us – and we are one note being played in a symphony of Life. \n As we are spiritual directors and companions\, we listen deeply and consider the benefits beyond ourselves. \n		 We recognize\, and are invited into\, new levels of spiritual companionship. This involves listening to the trees themselves – what are they saying? What do they want to share with us? How can we listen to the story of the trees? It involves listening to the land – the forest itself\, the earth\, and the air. In a time of climate crisis and much environmental stress\, doesn’t the Earth too need our companionship? \n We then retell the story of the trees to one another. \n We reflect what has been revealed to us by the trees to our spiritual companions. And as spiritual companions\, we help to create the contemplative containers that will hold these sacred stories and help to weave them into our collective Story. We hold space for the tree\, the soil\, and the sky. We listen for what needs to be shared. We compassionately mirror back\, and we see ourselves too. We dissolve into being with all that is. There is no “us and the trees” – there is no separateness. You and I and the trees – we are one. \n A Unique 7-Day\, 6-Night Journey to the Blue Ridge Mountains \n The Blue Ridge Mountains \n \n The Blue Ridge Mountains are part of the Appalachian Mountain range. They extend 550 miles in the eastern United States\, and include parts of Georgia\, South Carolina\, North Carolina\, Tennessee\, Virginia\, West Virginia\, Maryland\, and Pennsylvania. The Blue Ridge Mountains are known for having a bluish color when seen from a distance. Trees put the “blue” in Blue Ridge\, from the isoprene released into the atmosphere. This contributes to the characteristic haze on the mountains and their perceived color. The Blue Ridge Mountains have stunted oak and oak-hickory forest habitats\, which comprise most of the Appalachian slope forests. Flora also includes grass\, shrubs\, hemlock and mixed-oak pine forests. \n About the Trees \n \n Affordable accommodations \n \n With this SDI Journey we are able to offer reasonable pricing\, with a significant Early Bird discount if you register by June 30th. We are offering standard single and double rooms in both a contemporary inn setting\, as well as multi-room cabins and cottages. Bring a friend (or a few friends!) and let us know with whom you’d like to share lodgings. If four or more of you would like to reserve a cabin or cottage together\, call us and we’ll work something out. \n Retreat Leaders \n \n Dr. Jeanette Banashak returns to guide our Forest Bathing Retreat. Jeanette is a queer and bilingual interspiritual and interreligious companion. She has a diploma in shinrin yoku (forest bathing) and guides people of all ages in nature urban immersion experiences as an act of justice\, as well as is working on a piece that explores interspirituality and trees. She is the co-founder/director of The Spiritual Guidance Training Institute\, an organization providing training in spiritual direction/companionship with an interfaith\, interspiritual\, inter-contemplative focus. Jeanette is the author of The Mindful Pilgrimage: A 40-Day Pocket Devotional for Pilgrims of Any Faith or None and a 30-Day ezine of haiga from the Camino (available on SGTI’s website). In 2018\, she became a “dual pilgrim” after walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain and Kumano Kodo in Japan. Jeanette also teaches social and emotional learning and development at Erikson Institute and spiritual direction at the Graduate Theological Foundation.  		\n \n Simon de Voil will be back to provide his special gifts of spiritual companionship through music. Simon recently facilitated the Weaving Our Paths webinar\, is an ordained interfaith/interspiritual minister\, trained to be a sacred presence outside the conventions of traditional religion. As a sacred musician\, spiritual mentor and worship leader he incorporates chant\, ritual\, poetry\, storytelling\, and mindful practice to create a space for profound connection and sacred witness. Simon provides music for worship\, ceremony\, and prayer in a wide variety of churches and non-religious spiritual communities. He particularly loves to create music for meditation\, healing services\, and rites of passage. \n Testimonials from our March 2023 Retreat \n “This was an amazing process.. it changed my view of the forest and nature… it deepened my spirituality…” \n ” I was invited to ask the stream a question\, and somewhat reluctantly did so. But what the heck\, why not? And then I received the clearest answer to a question I’d been toying with for weeks!” \n “Walking the labyrinth with this group was magical. Usually I don’t get much from walking the labyrinth with a group\, but this time was different and I had a deeply spiritual experience while walking.” \n “At one point that day\, Jeanette encouraged us to see what we could taste. I lifted my face and opened my mouth just as a raindrop slid off a rhododendron leaf and dropped onto my tongue. I felt nurtured by nature.” \n “I came home and immediately felt a deeper connection to the trees in my yard and neighborhood. Every time I walk the dog\, I think of my feet ‘kissing the earth.’” \n “The dusk to dark lighting\, the music\, and walking in the company of those who had companioned us on our transformative week of forest bathing was a magical and liminal space experience…I also will be more intentional and committed to my role and responsibility of listening to and being a voice for the more than human companions of our world.” \n “This experience confirmed to me that there is growing appetite for this wonderfully gentle yet potent transformative\, grounding and healing embodied practise.” \n Photos From Our Previous Retreat \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Planned Activities \n \n \n Learn and practice Shinrin Yoku (Forest Bathing) – from Dr. Jeanette Banashak\, trained facilitator.\n \n \n Receive (and offer!) spiritual direction and companionship in the form of 1/1 and group sessions.\n \n \n Daily guided meditation in the mornings and group reflection and attunement sessions in the evenings.\n \n \n We will offer activities to complement and augment the Forest Bathing experience\, including walking meditation\, spiritual journaling and haiku writing\, artmaking and contemplative photography.\n \n \n There will be unprogrammed spaciousness offered all throughout the week – find your own pace and rhythm for introspection and community engagement.\n \n \n We will intentionally set aside space for Emergence – rather than offer specific programming\, we will collectively discern what needs to be offered within a durational space\, based on what Spirit is arising in you and in others.\n \n \n A Sample Day Plan \n Subject to change\, but to give you a sense of how we envision a day might be structured. morning contemplative practice – meditation\, yoga\, outdoor sit breakfast morning program: forest bathing lunch rest\, walk\, creativity\, intentional community building in various groups poetry vespers dinner campfire\, drumming\, creativity\, reflection evening ritual\, dedication \n About Kanuga Conference Center \n \n \n \n More than a beautiful place\, Kanuga is a sanctuary for your spirit. \n Established in 1928\, Kanuga is a non-profit conference\, retreat and camp center nestled on 1\,400 peaceful acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Hendersonville\, NC. Slowly and mindfully\, we attune our senses in a natural setting and cultivate awareness\, relationship\, and appreciation for the intelligence of things both living and non-living. Forest bathing is an evidence-based practice that nurtures health and happiness through engagement with the forest or natural surroundings. Though the name was coined in Japan in the 80s\, people have nourished relationships with the natural environment since the beginning. In Japan\, forest bathing is a foundational practice for health and well-being and can be prescribed by a doctor. \n What about COVID-19? \n Kanuga Conference Center\, Inn & Lodging continues to follow guidelines from the CDC and the local health departments. All guest rooms are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. Every surface and touch point in the room\, and its entry\, are cleaned and disinfected using EPA-approved\, antimicrobial products developed specifically for the use against emerging viral pathogens and novel coronavirus. Public spaces are also continuously cleaned and sanitized at a heightened frequency throughout the day. \n How physically active will we be? Will I be walking the whole time? \n During this Journey we will take walks through the surrounding forest\, on paths and hiking trails. Our retreat center is surrounded by forests with easy access\, so there is no need to walk long distances if you do not want to or if mobility is an issue. We will let you know each day\, before any activity\, whether there is any physical intensity involved and the level of activity required. On any given day\, a participant can skip a walk. That said\, you should generally be in good health for this Journey. \n What will accommodations be like? \n We have a mix of accommodations through Kanuga Conference and Retreat Center. SUMMARY:SDI LGBTQ+ Gathering March 2024
DESCRIPTION:This is a space for LGBTQIA+ spiritual directors and companions to gather and connect. \n\n\n\n\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n\n \n \n Registration is closed for this event. \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\nBrave Blessings! \n\n\n\nIn this session we will explore how we\, as LGBTQIA individuals and communities have experienced “blessings” in our lives\, and how our spiritual practices have opened us up to meaningful healing\, growth and aliveness. We will examine how such blessings are not bound by space and time and are both individual and collective experiences.  Together\, we will explore how we have experienced blessings in the past and how they are present today. We will also dance with what role(s) blessing might play within spiritual companionship to enrich/reclaim connections to the Sacred\, to strengthen and transform us to bravely face the issues/opportunities we and our companions are facing in our troubled world. \n\n\n\nHost\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRavi Verma is a spiritual director and has worked professionally with churches and lay leaders for over twenty-five years. Ravi’s passion is to work with individuals and groups to build bridges between parts of ourselves\, with others and the cosmos based on our connection to the Divine. Ravi\, born in India\, now teaches at Stillpoint\, and works with corporations\, retreat centers\, and non-profits on issues of spiritual development.  Ravi is a past Chair of the Coordinating Council of Spiritual Directors International.
