Come and join other spiritual directors and companions for a day retreat to Reflect, Regroup and Recharge.   Sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Regional Gathering of Spiritual Directors International (SDI), this will be a day to leave behind our Zoom boxes and be together: seeing old friends, making new friends, having contemplative silence together, connecting with nature, and building skills.

Workshop Details

Exploring Group Spiritual Direction

Margot Eyring, PhD, will invite us to explore foundational principles for group spiritual direction, then lead the group to practice some creative ways of being together for group listening and direction.

Margot has been leading different kinds of contemplative groups for over 40 years.  She is a life-long learner and contemplative activist who offers creative ways to welcome those seeking a place to be known and to belong. She practices radical hospitality in diverse places as artist, chef/caterer, college professor, workshop and retreat leader, spiritual director, coordinator for a community of spiritual directors, and partner.

Friendship for the Wild Earth

This after-lunch workshop is a practice to refresh a sense of your own unique self, walking the Earth. Gathering outside near the center’s labyrinth, Maria Barrera and Elizabeth Tippett will guide a brief ceremony to honor the Spirit of the Holy in all creation. Then, embracing the invitation from Wild Earth, we will cross a threshold into a silent walk of healing friendship.

The Reverend Dr. María R. Barrera, EdD, LPC, CRC, CCC (She, her, they, them) Maria has been engaging in advocacy for the spiritual care for those in prisons, veterans’ affairs hospitals, substance abuse rehabilitation, with disabilities, in hospice, mental health, HIV/AIDS, BIPOC, LGBTQ2S+, human trafficking, sexual and domestic violence, cyberbullying and missing & murder Native American relatives.

Elizabeth Tippett has been a Spiritual Companion since 2011. Honoring beauty in all, she offers a variety of practices grounded in Eco-Spirituality. Her focus is on companioning individuals as they listen for the Holy.  Elizabeth co-founded Wild Church: James River and is a graduate of the Seminary of the Wild and Shalem Institute for Spiritual Guidance.

Navigating the Impact of Trauma & Mental Illness Within Spiritual Direction

During this program, time will be spent dialoguing about trauma and mental illness and how to be present to and meaningfully engage those whose spiritual journey includes these painful realities. Use of journal prompts, meditation, and other creative exercises will be incorporated for spiritual directees/companions to explore and connect with ways/tools for compassionately accompanying others with these experiences.

Gordon Creamer (he, him) has been involved in healthcare programming and operations since 2001. He currently serves as Program Director at Well for the Journey in Lutherville, MD and is also a retreat guide, spiritual director, end-of-life-doula, and Reiki practitioner.
